A weekend in Brighton

Cheering on my daughter (C) at the Brighton Marathon, 6-8 May 2024

A weekend in Brighton

We arrived in Brighton on the afternoon of Saturday 8 April. We'd booked a lovely Air BnB house, 2 minutes from the i360 and next to the Royal Sovereign pub. Beautifully decorated house, with everything we could need, including bubbly, and nibbles to go with bubbly!

The pub was a lovely surprise - they poured a great Guinness or two, and the place had a welcoming atmosphere. We would have stayed for a meal - Thai - but C needed pasta so she cooked us a delicious carbonara.

She and her Dad left in the morning to walk to Preston Park for the race start, leaving me to watch Grey's Anatomy - the last one I'd seen was the final of series 16 where Richard had cobalt poisoning due to a hip replacement. This hit home because I'd had cobalt and chromium poisoning and my numbers were much higher than his! Anyway, I saw that there were four series to catch up on! How many will I be able to fit in to this weekend?!

Amazingly the marathon has its own app and we could track C the whole time. I'm really pleased to say that I managed to get to see her 4 times. Unlike the London marathon, where I had to jump on the tube each time to see where my husband was when he ran it, Brighton is much more cheerleader friendly.

C's partner, and wonderful friends - the Cheer Crowd - followed the route and were able to cheer her on (funnily enough) on several occasions too. A beautiful poster was created by the youngest of the crowd. This and other photos can be seen on Instagram.

C - even with an injury which the physio had strapped up for her - managed to finish the marathon in 5.15 hours. We're so proud of her, and she certainly enjoyed the pint of lager in the nearest pub we found!

Champagne followed, back at the house, and we had such a wonderful evening.

Next morning the 3 of us we treated ourselves to a visit up the i360. We were lucky to have clear blue skies again, so could see for miles and miles. You don't feel it move at all, and it goes up to a great height. I was only slightly worried to see cracks in the glass. Slightly worried enough to ask how they got there. Vandals when it was 'parked' on the ground floor. Now they park up high. Bloody idiots. What's wrong with people, eh?!

Another walk followed, along the promenade. C and her Dad went on the pier, and I sat on a bench enjoying the sunshine and a Magnum (white chocolate, thank you for asking). We then went to the Lanes to a lovely Italian restaurant where we ended our weekend in Brighton with more pasta.

We're so proud of C. You wouldn't believe, but she was born with a collapsed lung and pneumonia. Now, she's fighting fit and has run over 26 miles! Not only that, but she was raising money for Great Ormond Street Hospital; an amazing cause and thankfully not a place either of our kids have needed.

We left Brighton at about 5pm. Sad to go, but keen to return asap. C and I want to spend time musing round the shops in the Lanes, and go swimming in the sea. C's been cold water swimming for over a year and we did bring all our gear, but the sea was far too rough. Next time though...

Oh and how far did I get with Grey's Anatomy? 2 episodes! Was having too much fun with my girl. Not to worry, when I return from Canada (see next post(s)), I shall sign up for Disney so I can catch up with the rest of the series.
