Bears, earthquakes and tsunamis

Victoria to Ucluelet

 Bears, earthquakes and tsunamis

I'll miss the breakfast at the Embassy Inn. Today, I had a massive bowl of fruit, some granola and then a delicious bran muffin with strawberries. Yum yum. We took a blueberry muffin each for our journey. I know, stealing, but they were so good! As we were leaving the hotel, Gail pointed out a bald eagle on the roof of a hotel opposite. Looked like it had something stuck in its claws.

Gail drive us to Ogden point. Talk about stunning. Took my breath away.

Sad to leave Victoria. I really like the city. Went on a long journey to Ucluelet but we broke it up with stops.

Firstly Chemainus. Such pretty buildings and murals (60 of them apparently). We went to a drug store and I told the pharmacist about getting cold etc the day before. He didn't believe getting cold would cause sneezing and streaming but recommended some allergy tablets for day and others for night; CAD 50 later!! I'm pleased to say they did start to work fairly quickly. Thank goodness for that because my nose is so red and sore. I loved the sculpture of an old man and woman on a bench in the town. He's looking at her so lovingly. Really beautiful.

Next we stopped at cathedral drove, in Macmillan Provincial Park and had a walk amongst the trees. I was more interested in the trees that had fallen down! Moss had grown over some and there were intriguing shapes. Some of the roots were massive and revealed fascinating designs. It was here that I tried a dry pit toilet. Not too revolting.

We continued our journey and the scenery was stunning. High mountains, some with snow on top, and lots of lakes. Real wow factor.

Next stop was Goats on the Roof, although they no longer live on the roof! There was a greengrocer with such delicious looking produce. We bought apples, tomatoes and potatoes there and then in the little market we got salt water Taffy's which are chewy sweets, a slab of Guinness cheese(!), and some bread.

We finally arrived at Waters Edge, Ucluelet. Three flights of stairs were a pain to carry our cases up, but so worth it when we saw our view. We're overlooking a pretty harbour.

There was a piece of paper on the table. What to do in the event of an earthquake or tsunami. WTF!!! On the roads there are signs for tsunami evacuation route. And all I was worried about was bears! Now there are bears, earthquakes and tsunamis to be anxious about!!

After we had some tea on our balcony, Gail persuaded me that we should go out again. I'm so glad she did. We went to Winninersh Beach for the sunset. OMG, truly breathtaking. Gail sang on the way back to the car to scare off any bears nearby!!

Well what a great day. Many kms driven and many sights seen.
